Our clients and friends, Rebekah and Xander, celebrated their first wedding anniversary this month; we always say this, but–phew–time flies when  you’re having fun!  We are so happy for these two special people.  They were married in Rock Hill, SC at First Baptist Church, then with a reception at Events at Manchester.  See their original blog post here.
Rebekah and Xander have a very sweet story to share and lots of great advice.  We were thrilled that they were willing to contribute some of their reflections with us.  Their thoughts are right on point, and there are lots of great little nuggets of advice in here!
Congratulations Rebekah and Xander!  You know guys, North Carolina is between Florida and New York some where.  🙂  Come see us!
Q: Catch us up!  Where are you now?
A: Since our wedding day we have been constantly fixing up our apartment in Florida, making it more and more a home (with the help of some of our wedding pictures, of course). We’ve been working and growing in the jobs we’ve had in Disney Entertainment since we met. Xander’s been doing a fair amount of puppetry and I just finished a temporary assignment working with performing arts groups and am back to performing in parades and shows. Our first major life change (after getting married) will come next year when we move to Ithaca, New York so Xander can attend Veterinary School at Cornell University. As we gradually prepare for the change to a colder and less animated-character-filled climate we’re enjoying the chance to relax, go on a few trips, cook a huge number of homemade pizzas and just enjoy each other’s (and our cat’s!) company without the intensity of wedding planning.

We’ve actually gone through our share of challenges this past year, mostly because of Xander’s ongoing medical problems which thankfully are finally getting resolved. We always knew we made a good team, but after going through multiple rounds of hospitalizations and treatments we know even more deeply that we can count on each other even at our lowest points. It is sometimes difficult to ask for or expect help from others, but we have learned that part of being married is being able to openly and humbly admit that neither of us can always do everything alone–that sometimes we need to be taken care of, and that’s ok.
We’ve also learned that, as fun and exciting as big events like weddings can be. The most meaningful and special moments of a lifelong partnership are sometimes the least celebrated, most seemingly mundane. Like holding hands on the couch after a long day of work or even the joy of working together to finally get the kitchen cleaned up.

Q. Describe a special moment from the wedding day–maybe something that surprised you or touched you the most.
A. The horse-drawn carriage ride (pulled by a horse named Penny) from the church to the reception, which had the potential to seem a tad cliche but which ended up being a beautiful few moments of calm together to let the reality set in the we had just gotten married.
Q. What was your favorite photograph from the wedding?
A. It’s so hard to pick just one! One that stands out is a shot of the just two of us from across the water at Glen Cairn Gardens. It was an intimate moment on a day filled with people, and Stephen and CJ captured it from 200 feet away. In general, our favorite pictures were the candid ones that really captured little moments of joy throughout the day.
Stephen and CJ were great. They were very personable and approachable but also very respectful about making the day about us, our families, and our guests. They injected a strong positive energy into the whole experience. They had great eyes for how to best approach capturing our wedding day, and seemed to always be around to take pictures without ever making me feel like they were intruding on the intimate moments they have immortalized.

Q. If you could go back in time, and knowing then what you know now, give advice to your newly engaged self! What would you give more attention? What things would you move down the list of priorities?

A. You’ll have to make some compromises with wedding details, but this is your day, so stick to your guns about the things you really want. We probably didn’t need to spend as much time as we did worrying about what people might think about us eating pizza before the ceremony or playing laser tag at the reception. Those unique details made the wedding special to us, and it is important to remember that guests are there to celebrate you, not to judge you, so do what you want!

Once in a while, we get clients that are so carefree and happy, all we have to do is show up and capture that sweet spirit.  This was the case with these two love birds.  We visited Kevin and Kristyn for their engagement session in Shelby, NC so we could get photos on Kevin’s family land.  This is also the place Kevin proposed, on a super cold and windy day that had Kristyn wondering why Kevin wanted to “talk a walk” in conditions like that, that is, at least until she saw the spotlight on the tree he had carved in.

Here’s what they had to say about each other:

How did you two meet?

We met through a mutual friend, Peter Wilkins. I (Kristyn) worked with him at Prescriptions Plus and had gone to him for advice on how to cancel a date with a guy I really wasn’t interested in, and out of the blue Peter says “Oh my gosh you need to meet Kevin!” He and Kevin barely knew each other from showing cattle together years ago so it was quite random that he think to put us together like that. He showed me a picture of Kevin and I said “yes I believe I do need to meet Kevin!” He messaged him on facebook the Kevin added me and we started messaging back and forth and the rest is history. We are very grateful for Peter! 🙂

For Kevin: What do you love most about her?

Aside from her stunning good looks, her personality is out of this world. From the moment we met we instantly clicked and talked and laughed like we had known each other for years.

For Kristyn: What do you love most about him?

I love how goofy he is and that we can be goofy together and have the best time! He makes me laugh all the time and allows me to completely be my goofy self and loves me for it. I love how he looks at me and makes me feel like the only girl in this world. I also love his outgoing personality and his many many talents. There is not a day that goes by that he doesn’t impress me.

~

With Kevin and Kristyn, what you see is what you get.  This session for us felt like we were shadowing them on a typical Friday night date, and their true blue genuineness and warmth made our “job” fun, inspiring, and super easy.

Congratulations Kevin and Kristyn!  PINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEShelby NC PINIMAGEPINIMAGE

We don’t know how we get to work with the sweetest people on the planet, but we do!  Jordan was one of the most fun, easygoing, and happy brides we’ve ever seen, and Ben is the guy they said “kept his mind about him, even while he gave his heart away.”  They are the perfect match, and their wedding made for a lighthearted, but deeply meaningful day.

Congratulations Jordan and Ben!

  • The Farm at Brusharbor - Love this beautiful wedding of Jordan & Ben’s captured by Torrence Photography!ReplyCancel

David has been a friend to both of us for several years, but when he worked as our summer intern in 2013, he became more like a brother.  His cool head, sharp wit, and sweet and willing spirit helped give us one of our most productive and fun years we’ve had.  (And we listened to a lot of great music.) When David visited a few months ago and told us he had a diamond burning a hole in his pocket, we knew the girl that caught his eye must be pretty special.  We were oh-so-right.

Exactly six months since their first date, we met David and Ellen in Mount Pleasant and then Charleston for their engagement session. (What a way to remember a special day!)  They were just as playful, classy, and visibly in love as you would hope for two starting their journey together.  “I honestly love everything about Ellen, from her beautiful smile to her kind and gentle spirit,” David said.  “I love her faith, and that is easily the strongest bond we have. We pray, discuss scripture, and worship together, and her faith inspires me. She also has a care and passion for other people, and it shows in the way she treats her students in the classroom.” (She’s a 7th grade Math teacher, which already speaks to her character!)  He said, “she earnestly cares for each and everyone, and I’m lucky enough to be the one that she cares for most. I look forward to learning from her and growing stronger with her in the years to come!”

Ellen said it was hard to pinpoint what she loved most about David.  “We know that we’re not perfect by any means, but David and I both feel that we’re perfect for each other – which is a wonderful gift, but also makes it hard to describe what we love the most!”  She says, ” I love David’s faith in Christ. He lives out his faith intentionally and loves others so well. I can honestly say that through David, I get a glimpse of Jesus’ love for me. I love David’s leadership. I’ve never felt more safe and comfortable with someone, yet challenged and encouraged to grow at the same time.”  The security and ease they give to each other is something we noticed, too.   “I also love his sense of humor,” Ellen says.  “David has this wonderful combination of wit and cheesiness”–also noticed!– “and some of my favorite memories are the two of us doubled-over in laughter. I can’t wait to spend my life with him!”

David, buddy, you chose very well.  Ellen did too.  🙂  We love you both!
